Future Of Automobile Biometrics

September 27, 2021 By Steve Coleman Leave a Comment

Over the past decade, mobile phones have transformed from a useful communication device to an extension of one’s existence.

Although it is unlikely that the common public will start living out of an automobile, the auto industry seems to be seeing similar advancements in the use of biometrics.

Just as cell phones use advanced security technologies such as facial recognition and fingerprint unlocking, automobiles have begun to rely on these technologies as well, to enhance the overall driving experience in many ways.

Future Of Automobile Biometrics (1)

Biometrics: A security system

Biometrics has arisen as an advanced grading of security systems for many individuals and businesses. With an exclusive identifier for your biological behavior, this can be seen as a perfect solution. However, a lot of care is needed for using biometric IDs for stand-alone authentication.

The current generation of cyber security is wholly focused on reducing the risk involved with this powerful security solution. The ease of hacking passwords has long been a flaw in security systems. This flaw needs to be overcome with the help of biometrics by connecting proof of identity with our body and behavioral patterns which is difficult to replicate.

Biometrics in Automobile Safety

In the automotive industry, one of the most favorable applications of biometric technology is to keep vehicles safe. Automakers have already reached a stage where they can manufacture keyless fingerprint igniters for cars. Given the current speed of advancement, facial recognition and voice activation may be possible to immediately lock or unlock a car. While it is true that certain biomarkers can be “hacked” or counterfeit, it now requires far more effort and prediction than the amount of work required to break into a normal car.

Biometrics making driving safer

Incorporating biomarkers as a biometric seat technology can be useful to assess and analyze drivers’ stress and anxiety in abnormal driving situations and can prevent accidents due to sudden illness. When a vehicle comes across physical intervention, biometrics can collect information from the steering wheel, throttle, and other components to determine if there are physical signs of anxiety; if there are, the car may advise the driver to take a break to improve his safety.

Biometrics making rental car experience enjoyable

Renting a car is usually annoying but introducing biometrics in this experience can enhance it. Rather than requiring customers to line up at the office to collect keys, rental agencies can simply provide tenants with temporary access rights through biometric information (such as their fingerprints). Once their tenancy ends, they can easily revoke that access remotely, eliminating the need for the renter to interact with the broker. This works two ways and also acts as security for car rental companies.

Advantages of Automobile Biometrics

Advantages of Automobile Biometrics (1)

  • Higher security and reassurance

Incorporating biometrics would provide a higher level of assurance to providers that a person is real by verifying the tangible characteristics such as retina scans, fingerprints, and facial recognition. The introduction of biometric authentication in automobiles adds a barrier to theft. If they cannot provide fingerprints on the spot to unlock the car, there will be a security alert making it safer.

  • Enhanced User experience

Although the how’s and what’s of biometric authentication are technical, from the owner’s point of view, it is very easy and fast. Putting your finger on the scanner on the door handle and unlocking the car in seconds is faster than searching for the key and unlocking.

  • Non-transferable

Biometrics are unique even in the case of twins. Fingerprints are distinctive to an individual. This makes it a very reliable technology to act as a security factor.

A common man is incapable of copying fingerprints, facial patterns, or iris scanners using current technology available.

Disadvantages of Automobile Biometrics

Disadvantages of Automobile Biometrics (1)

Cost

Being such advanced technology, it is very likely to be expensive. This will eventually be built up in the car’s price making the model expensive when compared to a regular model.

Data breaches

As mentioned earlier, it is not completely impossible to breach biometrics and obtain one’s biomarkers. This might put one’s car at risk if someone highly skilled decides to steal it.

Tracking and data

Everyone is aware of the data tracking through various devices, including our data in the automobile industry database makes it susceptible to theft.

No more lending

It is very easy to borrow a friend’s or relative’s car in today’s day and age. Implementing biometrics would make the same process very complicated and tedious.

Inaccuracy

Due to many conditions, the biometric might fail to recognize the owner’s biometrics, triggering the alarm, which is inconvenient. Also, the complete opposite, i.e. a false positive can be a very risky affair.

Conclusion

Biometrics seems to be a cutting edge feature of most electronic devices, but some of the most promising applications for these innovations are in the automotive industry; it is difficult to say how quickly biometrics will be integrated and commonplace in new areas of the automobile industry.

Biometrics shall provide a very compelling security solution. Despite the risks, these systems would be highly convenient and difficult to replicate. In addition, these systems will continue to be developed for a long time in the future making them stronger.
